Nucleus of a Comet Simulation

Ingredilents:

  • 1cup Dry lce(Pounded into a fine powder)-62.2 degrees Celsius
  • 1 cup water
  • I large bowl
  • I plastic trash bag
  • 1 plastic spoon
  • Vinegar
  • Ammonia
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/8 cup Dirt, small rocks

Directions:

Take the large bowl and line the inside with the plastic trash bag. Pour water into bowl to simulate large amount of water found in comets. Add a dash of Vinegar to simulate Acetic Acid. Add one or two drops of Ammonia. Add a dash of Worcestershire Sauce to simulate the Organic, or carbon based molecules, detected in the nucleus of comets. Add dirt and rocks to simulate the dust and rock. Pound dry ice into fine powder, it is important not to have any large chunks of dry ice. Add dry Ice to mixture, and stir with plastic spoon for about 15 seconds. Mixture should have consistency of slush. Pull up the edges of the plastic bag together, and mold the mixture into a ball. Mixture should harden almost instantly. Remove nucleus model from bowl. Sometimes the model will crack or put out jets of steam, this is exactly what really comets do when they get too close to the sun.
